Winterizing Your Vacation Home: What to Do Before You Leave

Winterizing Your Vacation Home: What to Do Before You Leave

If you’ll be away from your Pocono home for the winter, a little preparation goes a long way toward preventing damage and costly surprises. Here’s a quick checklist to help protect your investment before the deep freeze sets in:

1. Protect Your Pipes

Turn off the water at the main valve (or turn off well pump breaker), drain lines, and open faucets to prevent freezing. If you leave the heat on, keep it set to at least 55°F and open cabinet doors so warm air circulates around plumbing.

2. Unplug & Shut Down

Unplug electronics, empty the refrigerator, and turn off lights and small appliances. Lower your thermostat if the home will remain heated and switch the water heater to “vacation” mode.

3. Secure the Exterior

Bring in or cover outdoor furniture, check gutters for debris, and inspect the roof for loose shingles. Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked.

4. Prep for Snow

Arrange for a local snow removal service if needed — keeping driveways and entryways clear prevents ice damage and makes inspections easier.

5. Check Before You Go

Do a final walkthrough to confirm all water is off, systems are secure, and security alarms are set.

A little prep now means peace of mind all winter long. Whether your Pocono home is a weekend retreat or a seasonal escape, Pocono Mountain Lakes Realty can help you protect and maintain it — or find your next one when spring rolls around.
